My method of retelling epics involves referring to other major existing translations, noting infelicities, unnecessary rewrites and lacunae where they exist, then translating the original work myself, and finally, using my translation as a basis for an imaginative retelling. But the greatest is one you haven’t mentioned at all: No publisher was willing to put the word ‘epic’ as a label on my books and won’t do it even now – because there is no such genre, category or label in commercial publishing. But the threat of the demon Jarasandha still looms large.
Even non-fiction doesn’t claim to be truth, merely ‘non’ fiction. Tagore’s wonderful style doesn’t need ‘enhancing’ or alteration, whereas the Mahabharata stands to benefit from a more updated version – it’s similar to what western translators such as Robert Fagles have done but in Indian English and with a distinctly Indian sensibility, and of course, my own ‘voice’.
